CHAPTER TWELVE
KINSEY DIALED 911 after she looked around for a few minutes. A large purse was next to her body. The only problem was it still looked full. Kinsey wanted to take a peek, but she decided against it. Bea answered on the first call.
âKinsey, I donât have time to talk, call if you have an emergency,â Bea gave a shout.
âIt. Is. An. Emergency!â Kinsey shouted back into the phone. âIâm at Lewis & Clark Park on 5th and Lewis & Clark Parkway. Thereâs another body. Itâs Stephanie Burns this time.â
Kinsey didnât hear anything more out of Bea Ziegler. Just a couple of sentences that included, âAre you sure,â and âsomeone will be there.â Of course, she stayed on the line until the police showed up. Chief Padgett and Brody arrived fifteen minutes later. Chief Padgett stepped out of an official black-and-white Prairie Brook police cruiser. Brody was in the unmarked Dodge Charger.
Chief Padgett was in the same black-and-blue uniform as before. Brody wore a gray jacket, green polo shirt, and slacks. The color worked well with his green hazel eyes as well as his sandy brown hair, even though his shirt was more of a light or mint green color. His gun and badge were still in the same place. She could tell by the look on Brodyâs face that he wasnât happy to see her there.
âDonât even say anything, Red!â Brody rested two fingers on his temple as he spoke. âLet me guess! Stephanie had information about Preston and told you to meet her here.â He continued massaging his temple and scrunched his lips.
âI guess thatâs why youâre the detective,â Kinsey grinned, âWell done, Sherlock Brody. Yes, I was meeting Stephanie, but when I showed up, she was dead. She didnât tell me anything.â
They waited an extra half an hour for the coronerâs van from Eden County to show up, as well as some techs from the Sioux Falls Crime Lab. A few crime scene investigators came out and took some photographs and grabbed Stephanieâs purse. They looked around and found a small handgun in the bushes.
Angie Thompson took a few minutes to examine the body. Then hauled Stephanie off in a body bag. Chief Padgett shook his head and said, âI donât know what Iâm going to tell Andy. I got my new truck from him.â
âIâm sure he wonât be happy to see me either, Dale,â Brody gulped. âHe and Dad were rivals. Iâll figure it out later.â
Kinsey stood and watched as they worked. She found something in the grass. It looked like a pen from Prestonâs office. Thatâs when she opened up the lid and realized it had a secret flash drive in the head. She quickly pocketed it before anyone noticed. This had to be Stephanieâs information. Should I give this to Brody? Kinsey thought. It will be the right thing to do. No, Iâll check it out first to make sure it has something to do with this, and then Iâll give it to Brody right away.
